Ponedeljek, 19. april @ Outpost, 20:00 10 $ BOSTON FREE JAZZ ASSN. presents Master Class z Jazz Improvisation and Creative Consciousness Workshop by Garrison Fewell: guitarist, composer, author, improviser Learn to speak the language of your inner creative voice and communicate with others through sound. Move beyond playing what you know through open structures and forms that encourage spontaneous improvisation in recordings and performances. Sometimes called avant-garde or free jazz, the basics of good harmonic and melodic skills still apply, even when there are no chord changes to adhere to. Participants and observers will experience the inner resources of creativity and practice techniques that enable musicians of all levels to gain access to freedom of expression. Previous experience with free improvisation is not necessary in order to attend this workshop. Participants will learn basic to advanced concepts and develop variations to create spontaneous improvisations, either alone or with others. The workshop will be recorded and everyone will have the opportunity to hear themselves at play. All instruments and percussion are welcome! Garrison has over 40 years of experience in the field of creativity and improvisation going back to the late 1960's. In 1972, he lived in Kabul, Afghanistan where he worked as a disc jockey and performed with traditional Afghan musicians. He is the author of four books on Improvisation. His most recent best-seller titled "Jazz Improvisation - A Melodic Approach" is published by Berklee Press and Hal Leonard. His new book, "Jazz Improvisation - A Harmonic Approach" will be available this summer. www.garrisonfewell.com myspace.com/garrisonfewell www.garrisonfewell.wordpress.com Ten Most Memorable Recordings of 2009 - Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix “Call what Garrison Fewell does composition or simply strategies for improvisation,” Garelick writes. “Whatever, the guitarist formerly known as one of Boston’s most eloquent inside players has become one of its leading experimenters.” "Variable Density Sound Orchestra should be on jazz education syllabi worldwide: It demonstrates how even free improvisation depends on listening closely to each other. The products of that chemistry are gorgeous." - Michael J. West, JazzTimes "Solos throughout the recording are eloquent rather than indulgent, and the "density" of textures always remains lucid. At times, the bed of complimentary guitar sounds acts like a pine-needle-covered path through a shady forrest! When I saw Kevin Micka play last summer in D.C., he was surrounded by a drum kit, guitars, and a table full of effects, multi-tasking on them not unlike a street-corner showman with a bass drum strapped to his back and a cymbal atop his head. But Micka's music is no trick-- patient and carefully detailed, his instrumentals rarely sound flashy or gimmicky. Often starting with a bare skeleton of a song, he adds skin and muscle until it becomes a full, dense soundscape, in a process that feels more like sculpture than songcraft." - Marc Masters, Pitchfork 9:00 – Super tight, hella-awesome friends Joel Roston (Big Bear/Polaris Mine) and Noell Dorsey (Guillermo Sexo) create quiet, somber compositions resting somewhere on a spectrum between loving and haunting. 10:00 – Similar to artists such as, Sigur Ros, Jim O'Rourke, and The Books, Animatronique straddles the worlds of acoustic and electronic music.
